I was going to call this article, part 1, the Picard argument but then I started thinking, is there any other ;). The fact is that Picard is better than Kirk although if you disagree feel free to submit an article to the site explaining why. Or if you don't have time just voice your opinion on the forums.
Kirk is of course from the original Star Trek whereas Picard hails from the later though still incredibly successfull follow-up, Star Trek: The Next Generation.
First of all let's talk aspethics. Kirk was all about the hair, Picard had no such weakness. I mean just in terms of running away from Borg and such, Picard has a streamline advantage.
It's about who is the best captain though. That is where Picard really comes out on top. Kirk was about leading from the front, he took each away party himself. That isn't the job of the captain of a ship that is the job of the first officer. Picard and Riker new it, Kirk didn’t.
This shows two things. First of all that Kirk would make a great first officer. But (and this is the second thing) he goes not make a good captain. If he goes down there and gets himself killed, what is the ship going to do then? He took all his other important officers down there too.
Next, Kirk never made a particularly good officer anyway. He managed to get himself made an admiral and then gets himself busted down to captain again. Is that the kind of thing Picard would end up doing? Of course not.
Kirk was just too happy for a captain. Picard has that whole dark brooding thing going on, just watch every time he goes into Ten Forward and has a drink so that he can moan about the current situation to Guinan.
Picard was much more cultured too – he could recite entire Shakespeare plays, he enjoys music and theatre. And I don’t care what everyone days, Dixon Hill was a cool guy.
Finally Picard is a hero, I mean how many times has he saved The Federation, The Klingon Empire and even the space timeline itself?
