Scrubs - the funniest thing on TV?

17 June 2005 15:19 pm

Recently I have started thinking more and more that know the current series of Have I Got News For You has finished, Scrubs is the unchallenged funniest show on TV. I mentioned it in passing comments but certain things have changed to increase my confidence in the statement.

First of all I'm not alone in thinking it is one of the best things on TV. In the review of tonight's episode on Channel 4 Radio Times said “it's one of the best sitcoms from the US, if not the best.” And I defiantly agree.

Secondly there is a lot of talk about Scrubs recently. From the fact that last Wednesday I heard my dad say “is Scrubs on? Let's watch that!” to several topics on one of the forums I hang out on starting with some arrangement of the words “Scrubs” and “ace” – it's not even a general forum, it's a Buffy board.

What makes Scrubs so funny though? Well two things. First of all, the fact is that it is funny. I do love Will & Grace and watch it each morning when I am at home. But I rarely laugh out loud at it. I love Friends, Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond, the three great sitcoms of our generation, but they just aren't as funny as Scrubs.

Secondly, there is a character you can identify with. They all have unique personalities. I personal see myself as a JD, drifting off into a dream world and suddenly coming out with random comments (though in my case it's usually Simpsons quotes) that leaves everyone around me starring in my direction.

Scrubs has managed to combine the surreal over the top characters you find in The Simpsons, Futurama, etc with the realness of the characters of a show like Friends. And it's a winning combination. And don't even get me started on how emotional it can get.
