Yesterday saw the last ever episode of Star Trek: Enterprise broadcast in the UK. Well, probably the last ever episode. Paramount have said it's over despite over $3 million being raised by fans. Their decision seems to make little sense though.
Whatever is going on, it may finally be time to look for the future – the next Trek. Sceptics seem to think this is the last Trek based TV series there will be. The reality is, I am sure, far from this.
Speculative fiction is the most powerful genre out there – 7 of all time top 10 box office grossing movies are SF (and that's counting Shrek 2 as kids). Star Trek had an 18 year gap, Star Wars had a 20 year gap but they couldn't be kept down for long.
Back in July 2004, Worfolk News reported on Rick Berman (writer and producer for most of the Star Trek stuff) and Brannon Braga (pretty much the same), the two who created Enterprise, were working on a project focused around Cadets at the Star Fleet Academy.
Rick is also working on a new movie although this hasn't reached pre-production yet and isn't due out until 2007 – it's also possible that this the above mentioned project are one of the same. But things are happening.
What is with the lack of news then? Well according to Babylon 5 creator J Michael Straczynski, Paramount is letting the franchise lie for a year or two before starting the next project. Hope is definitely on its way.
